While it was recently reported that Apple’s forthcoming iPhone 7 might feature a whopping 256 GB storage option, those rumors seemed to suggest that only the larger, 5.5-inch ‘iPhone 7 Plus’ would boast the impressive upgrade — which was first introduced as an option for the company’s 9.7-inch iPad Pro.
However, it appears that an even newer rumor — coming to us this morning courtesy of the research firm, TrendForce, alludes to the notion that, “with certainty,” in fact, both of the Silicon Valley tech-giant’s 2016 flagships will boast the 256 GB option.
TrendForce analysts additionally noted that “Apple has settled on most of the specs for the next iPhone” — which, as we previously reported, include 3GB of RAM (as an exclusive feature of the larger, 5.5-inch iPhone Plus). The report, however, confirmed with certainty that the 256 GB option will indeed be coming to both of Apple’s impending handsets — and not just the smaller, 4.7-inch model — as was previously speculated.
While the current generation of iPhones maxes out at 128 GB, it remains unclear, according to TrendForce, how exactly the inclusion of a 256 GB capacity might affect the existing options. For instance, the report alleges that Apple is currently mulling the idea of ending the 64 GB option — while instead, jumping straight from 32 GB to 128 GB, to 256 GB — a la the iPad Pro models. However, a similar transition for the company’s iPhone line has apparently yet to be finalized.
Surprisingly enough, however, the report also alleges that Apple’s current decision making has caused a dramatic ripple effect in the NAND flash space, and thus, massive price drops in storage across the board.
Also, while TrendForce’s report made no mention of the base-model iPhone’s storage capacity, it was recently reported — albeit by Chinese social media — that the forthcoming iPhone’s base-model capacity would be increased to 32 GB this year.
Lastly, the report noted that, as we’ve been hearing, the sweet new dual-lens camera will be an exclusive feature of the 5.5-inch ‘iPhone 7 Plus’.
Above and beyond all of those details, TrendForce noted that the ‘iPhone 7’ will remain almost identical to the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus — from a design and materials standpoint, while the reported upgrade to OLED displays will take place in 2017 at the earliest — on Apple’s milestone, 10th generation iPhone.
Of course, given the lack of any extreme design changes, the report also noted that sales of the Cupertino-company’s ‘iPhone 7’ could be a bit on the low-end of the spectrum this cycle. In particular, the firm predicted that Apple will sell approximately 216.5 million ‘iPhone 7’ units — which, though an impressive feat to the naked eye, is actually a drop of just over 8% from the current generation’s sales volume.
