Panasonic Eluga Arc review: Mobile phones are truly becoming smart. Thanks to increased processing power, better battery life, large screen sizes and a slew of productivity-oriented features, we can surely count on them to do all the tasks that we normally do on a desktop computer. To say that in not-so-far future, a mobile device will be our only computer doesn’t seem too far-fetched. In fact, it is fast becoming the primary computing device for a growing number of tech-forward, mobile workers.
A new phone from Japanese firm Panasonic is attempting to attract this growing tribe of mobile workers. The device is called Eluga Arc, it retails for Rs 12,490 and is truly a smart device. Just to give you an indication, the new Panasonic device comes with an inbuilt IR sensor to control-IR based smart home automated devices, such as air conditioners, televisions, DVD players.
For additional security, there’s a fingerprint sensor, which can be configured for 5 different fingerprints and commands, for one step screen unlocking, picking calls, launching applications or clicking selfies. It can even lock individual apps for enhanced security of personal data. Let us probe some of the interesting features of this Panasonic innovation.
Many among us associate Panasonic not with a mobile phone, but more so with cameras, air conditioners and microwaves, right? Take my word, the Japanese company is giving a major push to its mobile phone business here. For evidence, take a look at the Arc phone; this will impress you with its unique design. The device is beautiful to look at, it has a 2.5D curvature on a 4.7 inch screen with a sleek, unibody design.
The Arc feels extremely solid in the hand. Viewed from the front, it’s a sharp and attractive object. The look is stylish and premium. It definitely stands out from the rounded rectangle crowd. My review unit was royal gold and the best part is you get the advantage of a big screen in a package that easily fits in smaller hands. In simple terms, this Eluga’s stand-out feature is definitely its stylish, slender form.
Like I mentioned before, this 4G mobile device also features additional security with a fingerprint sensor, which can be configured for 5 different fingerprints and commands, for one step screen unlocking, picking calls, launching applications, clicking selfies and can even lock individual apps for enhanced security of personal data.
The Arc is enabled with Android for Work support which allows enhanced IT security and BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) compatibility for private smart devices to operate securely on corporate networks. It comes loaded with 4G VoLTE connectivity and Qualcomm Snapdragon processor for quick access to internet and smartphone operations anywhere, anytime. With the era of home automation gaining traction, the Arc has an inbuilt IR sensor which allows a user to give commands to IR based smart home appliances.
The Arc measures 139 x 67 x 8.1 mm in body dimensions. It has a 11.93 cm (4.7-inch) HD IPS curved display, which delivers pretty good daylight readability and wider viewing angles. The phone has an 8 MP rear camera with LED flash and a 5 MP front camera. The phone operates on Android 5.1 (Lollipop) topped with the FitHome user interface, which is engineered exclusively by Panasonic, providing single thumb-flick access to applications on the home screen.
With hardware selectively integrated to meet data processing and simultaneous functionality, the Arc is powered by a 1.2 GHz quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with 2 GB RAM and 16 GB internal memory, expandable up to 32 GB. The dual SIM smartphone holds a battery capacity of 1800 mAh with optimised power management software ensuring longer operation where the battery can be charged 75% faster with Qualcomm Quick Charge technology.
During my two-week experience with the Arc, the phone came across as a nifty device that is powerful and versatile. I had no issues with making calls. Voices were clear and crisp. The phone’s speakers, however, are a little soft, so you may miss calls or notifications in a crowded place. Internet browsing is fast and there is no lag whatsoever while switching between apps.
Overall, the Arc is a sturdy and powerful phone and designed to impress.
