Apple has refreshed the MacBook Pro line with six-core, eight generation Intel Core processors for more power and higher performance.
Along with the new processors, the MacBook Pro can now be upgraded to a maximum of 32GB of memory and a whopping 4TB of SSD storage.
The 15″ series features Radeon 555X or Radeon 560X discrete GPU graphic cards with 4GB of GDDR5 memory, while the 13″ line sticks to the integrated GPU now with 128MB of embedded DRAM. If you need more graphics processing power, Blackmagic Design also announced their eGPU powered by a Radeon Pro 580 graphics card.
The new line also features the third-generation of butterfly mechanism keycaps for a quieter typing experience. Apple recently offered refunds and an exchange program for those who experienced stuck keys.
THE COST TO UPGRADE
As usual, it’s going to cost an arm and a leg for a maxed out, top of the range model.
For standard configurations, the 13″ ranges from USD $1,299 to $1,799 and the 15″ starts at $2,399 with a higher spec for $2,799.
Upgrading the CPU from 2.6GHz i7 to the 2.9GHz i9 adds $300 and upgrading the memory to 32GB from the standard 16GB added $400 to the cost.
Since you can’t upgrade the internals at a later stage, if you want to add more internal storage, you will have to do it at purchase.
MATCHING LEATHER SLEEVE
Together with the MacBook Pro refresh, Apple also released a new leather sleeve accessory available in three colours. These had previously been available for the 12″ MacBook but not for the 13″ and 15″ line. For the 13″ model it will cost $179 and $199 for the 15″.

Shame, just got one a few months ago. Would love to have a 6 core i9! But to make that a useful optionI would also want at least 2TB of disk space. External drives are just not that quick, I really like the new Macbook Pro, even found the touchbar useful, but with this version, the one I would want is over €5K. And that price is just redicoulous.
We wil see, might go back to windows, really depends on what I dislike the most: adobe or windows. The good news: any investement in Macs has been worth every penny, still using a 2010 Mac Pro and 2011 17inch MBP, but these are use upgradable machines, they even fixed the graphics card on the 17inch for just €279.- So I guess any platform choice is going to be a years away, when there is a 16 core macbook pro 🙂
The new gtech SSD HD are pretty incredible as well as small/fast
The G-drive mobile is fast, the only one that I found that can do 2800mb.
Its a pretty good option if you don’t want to blow the budget on a laptop, but still around $1000 for 1TB.
Worthless
$6,700??? LMFAO!
I would go with 2.9 CPU, 1TB drive and 32GB RAM. $3899. yeah it’s expensive. I think this is the biggest performance boost the MacBook Pro has had in a long time. Usually only getting 25-30% more but this model is far better
The i9 would be my choice too, crazy to have it in a MBP! But would want 2TB of storage with that, the 550mb external SSD’s are just no fun.
Of course, the 4TB SSD at +$3,200 is more of a luxury as external SSD media is getting very affordable now. The Samsung T5 2TB SSD is $599 retail so you could get five of these for a total of 10TB for the same price.
If you want read speed above 560mb you still need external drives that are around $999 for 1TB, I got one of those Samsungs, great for HD footage, had some trouble with 4K after a minute or so playback.
Are you sure you’re using the right cable? If not then you most be talking 4k raw.. Even that plays smoothly on my timeline with these drives. Longe/bBigger projects I just drop down the preview quality a little without the need to proxy. Best of luck
With a Samsung drive? It could be Premiere CC is doing it’s thing again. It is just 4K from a FS5, nothing special, in 1/2 preview resolution it’s no problem. It’s the T3 cable that comes with the drive, according to disk speed I get around 550MB read. I’ll experiment with FCPX next time.
Oh come on. The 4TB ssd is a super sonic high performance ssd that offers 3200mb/s.blazing fast speed as opposed to the samsung off the shelf drives of 550mb/s. Thats why these are expensive. Get informed.
