Home-grown handset maker Intex recently launched the Cloud Fame 4G smartphone. Priced at R3,999, the device runs on the latest Android Marshmallow OS and offers a decent user experience with its 4G network connectivity, scratch resistant display and lighter body.
Out of the box, the device looks elegant. Although the exterior is made of plastic, the compact design, the curved back and the matte finish on the back panel makes it a perfect fit into the hands. The shiny metal band around the display further adds to the beauty. The front of the phone is dominated by a 4.5-inch display with a screen resolution of 854 x 480p. The display quality is fairly decent but could not match the visual experience offered by some of its nearest rivals such as InFocus Bingo 10.
The front also houses a front camera on the top, while three capacitive touch keys are placed in the bottom. There is space for a 3.5 mm headset jack and a micro USB charger port on the top edge. The power and volume rocker keys are placed at the right edge while the left is free from any distraction. The detachable rear panel is home to Intex branding along with rear camera. The device is neither too heavy nor too slim. It is comfortable to hold and operate and it is non-slippery at the same time.
More interestingly at this price point, the Intex Cloud Fame 4G runs on Android 6.0 and its entrails are powered by MediaTek’s 1 Ghz Quad Core processor. The device comes with 1 GB RAM and has 8 GB capacity for internal storage that can be expanded upto 32 GB with the help of microSD card. During the review period, Cloud Fame handled basic functions without any hiccup. In fact, we could play popular games like Temple Run 2 without any sluggishness or sign of heat. But at times we struggled while doing multiple tasking or switching between the apps.
To make the user experience smooth, the device runs Intex’s MOX keyboard, which allows a number of customisation options and colourful themes instead of default Google keyboard. Also, the company has made a few under the hood changes in the Android interface to allow user to close all the background apps at once by tapping on the clear-all icon which appears when you open the multi-tasking window.
On the camera front—the less said, the better. Cloud Fame 4G comes with a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 2- megapixel front camera. Both the cameras offer narrow frame. The test pictures that we clicked in most of the conditions—be it broad day light or low light conditions— they turned out to be poor and over-saturated. On the connectivity front, Cloud Fame 4G supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and all the major Indian network bands—4G, 3G, 2G. It has dual SIM slots. The device is packed with a replaceable 1800 mAh battery which offer decent standby time and could last between 4-6 hours with multitasking and continuous data usage.
Overall, the Intex Cloud Fame 4G is a decent 4G enabled budget smartphone.
