Ease of setup aside Powerline offers much the same for a lot less.

Powerline is overall pretty horrible. It’s passable if you’re prioritizing stability over speed, but at the cost of 80-90% bandwidth. I’ve been using powerline for about 6 years now, and performance gets only marginally better every generation. Honestly, most instances would be better of with a wireless bridge than a powerline. It’s almost as stable (using good equipment) and 10x the speed.

Besides, a powerline + wireless AP still doesn’t give you the fluidity of an off-the-shelf mesh network.

        this simply isnt true.

im using one right now and my speeds do not differ to when i move around the house and connect to one of the three AP’s that i have set up…

im using the cheapest model i could purchase also.

not if your home doesn’t have grounded outlets, in which case the speed of even the best powerline setups is poor.

      1. wussyib says:

It’s poor regardless. The only way you get powerline to match wifi speeds is if it’s on the same circuit. Basically, if you have your 2 powerline adapters in the same room, which defeats the purpose of even needing powerline.

same room? ive used multiple powerline adapters from different manufactures and ive never once seen a drop in speed…

not small houses either or i would have simply used wifi.

Looks like Apple needs to update the 4 year old Airport Express!

I completely forgot that Apple still makes networking devices. Yikes!
