Capcom’s newest Resident Evil game is absolutely terrifying in virtual reality. [Warning: Article contains disturbing images.]
Resident Evil 7 Biohazard was debuted at this year’s E3 event in Los Angeles. And it was apparently hard to ignore when Capcom set up a “haunted house” in the middle of the gaming convention, The Irish Examiner said.
With the virtual reality goggles on, the game immediately feels like a found-footage film similar to Cloverfield or The Blair Witch Project, according to tech website Polygon.
With new VR technology, players will be fully immersed in the horrifying world of Resident Evil. Unlike previous installments of the series, Resident Evil 7 is played in the first-person, where a single beam from a flashlight or camera will be the only saving grace for players.
The game forces a claustrophobic feeling in players, as they have no idea what lurks on the outskirts of their beam of light. One of the game demos places the player in an abandoned farmhouse, and tells them, quite simply, to escape.
Horrible things — like rotting stew, birds stuffed into microwaves, ominous dolls and mannequins — are placed around the farmhouse as players search for and discover clues. Capcom was sure to throw in their fair share of jump scares, as well.
The first-person perspective is a departure from the game’s previous installments, but probably a smart move for the series, Polygon said.
Capcom also noted that the entire game can be played in VR. Although certainly a more immersive experience, Polygon notes that controlling the VR perspective was slightly nauseating. Controlling the camera was reportedly an uncomfortable experience.
But nausea aside, Resident Evil 7 is expected to be a positive change for the series — and one that could potentially win over old and new fans alike.
This exciting, and disturbing, VR game is expected to be available for Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC on Jan. 24, 2017.
