4K Crystal LED (CLEDIS) display with 3D touch, 4GB ram, completely new design, new in-house Sony chip that’s faster than Snapdragon, 3000mAh battery, wireless charging, improved software optimization (no more heating up), seriously improved camera software (better image quality and faster camera app launch with no overheating), a good liquid cooling pipe, louder and clearer speakers with the edge slit style like the Z3+ and not like the Z3, improved fingerprint scanner, 100% certified and advertised reliable waterproofing, and a better volume/camera button placement like the Z3/Z3+ and not like the Z5 is what will make an Xperia perfect. Cmon Sony, we know you can do it, its time to impress us.

Who cares? Not like we’ll ever see it most likely.Sony should crap or get off the pot with their phones.Nice phones don’t matter if your marketing and distribution are carried out as though you’re on crack.

  3. James Stephen Edge says:

The removal of the wireless charging was what convinced me to skip the Z5 🙁

I like, no, love the Sony Xperia ‘design language’ and hope that they stick with it. I don’t like any of the Samsung designs and think the the Xperia range always looks much nicer than the Apple equivalent.. The interface is not over customised (like HTC and Samsung). Yes, better speakers, if possible, but then, I always use my sony nfc headphones when playing music (bring back Walkman!!!) and can continue this with a tap when I get home, using my Sony nfc sound bars. Or cast the screen to chromecast or cast from chromecast supporting apps.
Sony should be emphasising their audio quality and ease of connectivity. The camera has been excellent for years and just keeps getting better. We need a Z6 compact, Z6 and Z6 ‘ultra’ with good connectivity, excellent screen clarity, better speakers and quality photos & video. Interface should be as close to native marshmallow as possible, with, as other writers have suggested, the ability to switch on/off the Sony/Xperia ‘apps’ or more easily integrate 3rd party onto the excellent hardware.

I thought TechRadar was a serious website about technology. After reading this article I have to reconsider. You have aproblem with the design of the Sony Xperia Z5, but you don’t complain about the design of the Samsung Galaxy S6/Edge when essentially both feature front and back glass panels with an aluminum frame, which by the way took Samsung more than three years to catch up to Sony’s Z series. Then you mention that the UI needs improvement, when the Sony UI is known to be one of the lightest in the Android world, but you don’t have aproblem with the Samsung UI which on the contrary is one of the most SPU & GPU demanding UI that exist. Furthermore, you have a problem with the 1080p resolution of the Sony Xperia Z5, which is actually fine for a 5.2 inches screen, but you don’t have a problem with the pentile matrix screen that the Samsung Galaxy S3/4/5/6 have, which due to two subpixels (Red & Green) instead of the standard RGB subpixel layout which all Xperia Z phones employ, results in 30-50% lower actual resolution while the theoritical resolution of the screen puts a strain on the GPU and battery of the smartphone. In addition, you ask for a three day battery life when at the moment all of the smartphones in the market have an actual battery life of around 17hrs at most when used as smartphones, meaning not just for talking and texting, but also surfing the web, checking emails and facebook, using the GPS and taking photos and videos. So for any smartphone manufacturer to produce a smartphone capable of extending battery life from current 17hrs to 3 days, it would take a miracle with the current state of technology. Also, as far as the SoC is concerned, with the exception of Samsung and to a lesser extend of Huawei, all the other major smartphone manufacturers employ SoC from Qualcomm mainly and from MediaTek to a lesser extend. With Samsung consistently making use of Qualcomm’s SoC with the xception of the Galaxy S6. So any CPU and GPU performance increase will be unilateral to the smartphone world and cannot be accomplished from a single smartphone manufacturer. Wireless charging is slow and I personally prefer the fastest wired charging smartphone manufacturers can offer. USB Type C is not an established format yet, meaning that even if you buy a smartphone with such a port, most of your other gear will still feature microUSB ports, forcing you to carry more chargers or in case you forget the USB Type C charger then you won’t have access to your smartphone since you won’t be able to charge it. A proper implementation of 3D Touch is unique at the moment to iPhone, so all of the Android smartphone manufacturers are at the same level as far as 3D Touch integration into their products. Finally, in 2016 the only flagship smartphone which is offering waterproofing is the Sony Xperia Z5 with its IP68 certification, meaning that it is completely sealed from dust while at the same time it can be submerged up to 1m of water for at least 30 minutes. By the way, the IP68 certification is one of the highest among any mobile phones, let alone smartphones, as far as weather sealing is concerned. I agree that it would be good if we could have a smartphone able to withstand submersion to salt weater but with the current state of technology something like that it simply is not possible. Thus, instead of keep on dreaming of what smartphones would be nice be able to do in an imaginary world, it would be better if you pushed for elimination of pentile matrix screens entirely, or at least at the flagship level, for a more balanced screen resolution which would take into account the CPU & GPU performance as well as the battery or simply for larger batteries.

Xperia still the only phone with noise canceling, wet finger tracking and ps4 remote play. They also have the most features of any phone with DSEE HX, fm, sd, waterproofing, etc etc. I challenge anyone to show me more hardware on any phone. As for what I want…now that I have a plastic version of Google cardboard, I would love night vision. Also laser measuring for distance and heat.

  7. iia3ezu says:

Please stop bundling the Xperia crapware, or at least let the users uninstall them without rooting the phone.

Lifelog, Sketch, Socialive, Lounge, Album, Music, Video, TrackID, File Commander.

(File Commander is from MobiSystems but Sony seems to have made an agreement to bundle it on every Xperia phone and make it the default file explorer app. You cannot uninstall it without rooting the phone).

    1. Shamoy Rahman says:

I would consider Google apps crapware instead of the Xperia apps. Google’s music, photos, calendar, camera and movies apps suck balls. The only thing I would not prefer on Xperia devices is File Commander, and that’s it.

    2. Ramadhan Azka says:

I agreed but music, album, video, sketch, and trackID are quite useful

    3. profoundWHALE says:

Samsung and the others are no better when it comes to this stuff. And, you can always disable them.

    4. Shamoy Rahman says:

Honestly, these small apps have little to no impact on the performance and experience. If you don’t like them, disable them and you’re all set.

  8. Great Dude says:

Good points but I have to disagree on two points
UI: Xperia phones has a good UI and near nexus one, its apps like Walkman and Album are superior and are the best that any OEM can give, but Xperia Lounge could be called a bloat.
Also their keyboard is amazing and support more languages than Google Keyboard, so I think they should also keep it but maybe improve it
USB type-C: , it is still early for. A lot of people doesn’t have PCs that spport them, most accessories doesn’t support them and if you go to a friend or any other place you couldn’t use it.

I also hope that they make a much better software for their camera .

  9. profoundWHALE says:

I honestly have no idea how techradar has people that write articles for the site, yet never reads the reviews on the site.

    1: A new design

They did actually change it so that the back is metal rather than glass, if that counts.

    2: An improved UI

Rather than do a lot of work on the overall interface, I believe they put more work into the apps, like say the camera and playstation apps. I could be wrong though. Android M should also resolve this ‘issue’

3: A better screen “The Sony Xperia Z5 doesn’t have a bad screen at all, but at 1080p…”

You’re an idiot for even suggesting this when the iPhone has less than 1080p and gets top marks, the LG G3 had a QHD screen and you guys put it in the CONS. Yes, the bad things about the phone. Sony has a 4K screen if you have the money, so I don’t know what your problem is.

    4: Three-day battery life

Okay, so you want their phones to be QHD phones that are waterproof and running a Snapdragon 820 that can last 3 days on a charge. Well, if they give you that, you’ll complain about the bulkiness so please, make up your mind.

    5: Plenty of power

I’m sure a brand new processor will fix that, despite being a top of the line Snapdragon 810 which doesn’t have overheating issues. You might as well ask them to release a phone with a new top of the line processor that doesn’t exist.

    6: Wireless charging and USB-C

The wireless charging I get. It especially makes sense if you want to make the phone waterproof. I’m 50/50 with USB type C, but it should happen eventually.

    7. Better speakers

If this was such a big deal, I would see the HTC One, and the Blackberry Priv getting higher scores. I’m not disagreeing though, I could like better speakers, I’m just trying to point out the hypocrisy that I keep reading.

    8. 3D Touch (Or ‘Force Touch’)

This is pretty neat, it’s ‘right click’ for your phone… but that’s it. I do really like the right click function on my mouse though, so I wouldn’t say no. There is probably another 3D Touch 2.0 that I would rather have them use. What would it be? Who knows?

    9. Better waterproofing

You’d be better off just getting a case that allows it to be submerged much deeper and survive impacts. Better yet, more cases. It’s really hard to find good cases for the Xperias for some odd reason. Even an Official Sony case that is like their underwater waterproof housing that they have for their action cam… just more professional looking.

They do need much better quality control though.

    10. A big new feature

Well, Blackberry has its keyboard, Apple has its OS, Samsung has it’s… wireless charging, and Sony has it’s camera/playstation/waterproofing. All of them sound pretty boring, but Apple and Samsung already have a lot of market share. Honestly, the only way I can see Sony pulling ahead is if they somehow integrate the phone into their professional products.

    Anyways…

My biggest issue with this site is that you are echoing the thoughts of people who are ignorant, rather than experts who are giving a fair review on a new phone. For example, 3 out of 5 stars on a $200 phone because it doesn’t have some of the $500 features (see also, gimmicks) is just hilarious.

This is a site that is ‘The Home Of Technology’, and doesn’t even know when it’s just regurgitating ads and marketing PR.

On the plus side, you’re better than cnet.

    1. PeterL says:

Mostly, I agree. But the only thing I wait from Sony is a new design, and I do not mean “metal” or “super glass”. They should, or rather must, change the phone dimensions. The best phones are the tiniest ones. If they manage to keep its width and thickness, while reducing its length by at least a centimeter, they will gain some market share.

Sony smartphones are greatly designed, but they are too big (and this is where we should also recall gigantic iPhone).

  10. FinalFantasyXNemesis says:

Fraud, useless, bias, Samsung/Apple fanboy media: Complains and down plays the Z5 premium superior 4k resolution compared to Samsung/Apple phones by saying, “4k doesn’t matter because most Android content only supports 1080p and 720p”.

Fraud, useless, bias, Samsung/Apple fanboy media: “The Samsung Galaxy Premium is the best phone on the market with a 1440p resolution that trumps the Z5 1080p resolution even though most Android content only supports 1080p resolution and 720”.

Fraud, useless, bias, Samsung/Apple fanboy media: “We want the Z5 to have a better resolution than the Galaxy even though most Android content only supports 1080p and 720p resolution”

Do you see the hypocrisy and double standards here?

Why are you begging for a better resolution when you downplayed the 4k resolution of the Z5 premium? That is why Sony put a 4k resolution in the Z5 premium ya tards. You could just buy the Z5 Premium which costs about the same as the premium Samsung/Apple phones and boasts a better 4k resolution, better battery life, better touch sensor, and better waterproofing. What more do you want? The Samsung Galaxy and iPhone are the most overrated hunk of junk smartpnones on the market. There is nothing special about those phones that you should pick them over a Z5 premium. Seriously, you smartpnone reviewers are hypocrites, frauds, and liars. You people are literally just Samsung/Apple fanboys who flip flop and are actively trying to find things to nit pick and reasons to down play Xperia phones and you expose your double standards and hypocrisy in your reviews You tech websites are a joke. You’re a cancer that pollutes the the general consumer.
