We’ve seen what Apple’s 2018 phones look like – now we’re casting our eyes to 2019
The wait is over. Apple revealed three new iPhones in its September event, finally putting an end to months of speculation.
Left cold by Apple’s latest? Or maybe you’re only halfway through your contract and won’t be iPhone shopping until 2019? Either way, this is the kind of thing we want from Apple’s iPhone XI, iPhone 11 or whatever they end up calling the 2019 model.
Apple iPhone XI – What we want to see
We’re a year away from a new iPhone (unless we get an enhanced SE outside of the usual update cycle), but we do have a few features we’d very much like Apple to implement… some more realistic than others.
Apple Pencil support
A long-standing rumour in the lead up to the release of the iPhone Xs Max was that Apple would be taking a leaf from Samsung’s book and bringing some kind of stylus support to the plus-sized iPhone. That turned out to be well off the mark.
That’s a shame. The Samsung Galaxy Note series has demonstrated the utility of a stylus, and while the Apple Pencil in its current state is a bit too bulky to sit alongside the iPhone, surely it’s not beyond the wit of Apple’s engineers to come up with something that fits the format?
USB Type-C charging
Another rumour in the lead-up to the release of the latest iPhones was that Apple would be dumping the Lightning cable after five generations, and moving to USB Type-C. This may seem unlikely, given Apple’s love of proprietary cables, but it’s not without precedent – the MacBook now uses this connector to charge, after all.
Sadly, again, this rumour was off the mark. As someone with a growing number of USB Type-C cables, I’d certainly welcome a change of direction from Apple on this one.
Bring back the headphone jack!
I know it’s not going to happen, but a man can dream. If Samsung can still find room for the tiny 3.5mm port, so can you, Apple.
In-screen fingerprint scanning
Face ID is great and everything, but sometimes you don’t want to loom over your phone for a quick unlock. That’s why I miss Touch ID so much.
That would get in the way of the beautiful all-screen front, of course – but that’s where under-screen fingerprint scanners come in. The technology is there to see on the on Vivo’s X20 Plus UD, so hopefully Apple will have its own version by 2019.
Say no to the notch
If we can’t get rid of the notch completely – apparently people are quite fond of selfies – we could at least reduce it. Rivals from Huawei and OnePlus have managed to make the black bar along the top much less prominent. Can Apple follow suit?
Apple iPhone XI – Release date
Let’s get real: the Apple iPhone XI isn’t coming any time soon. In fact, thanks to remarkable consistency over the past six years, we have a very good idea of when the iPhone XI will be with us.
Model Release date
- iPhone 5-21 September 2012
- iPhone 5s-20 September 2013
- iPhone 6-19 September 2014
- iPhone 6s-25 September 2015
- iPhone 7-16 September 2016
- iPhone 8 / iPhone X-22 September 2017 / 3 November 2017
- iPhone XR / iPhone Xs-26 October 2018 / 21 September 2018
Yes, there have been recent anomalies with the iPhone X and the iPhone XR, but as a rule of thumb September is iPhone month – and we don’t have any reason to suspect Apple will change this winning formula in 2019.
