Roll up, roll up. It’s a new day and that means a new iPhone 8 rumour.
On today’s menu, we’ve got claims that Apple could be getting ready to drop Intel as a parts supplier for its next flagship phone.
Why? Well for the iPhone 7 Apple used a combination of Intel and Qualcomm supplied modems, although the Qualcomm units had to be throttled to create an even user experience as the Intel chips couldn’t keep up.
Now, North Capital Markets’s industry analyst, Tom Sepenzis, has claimed Intel’s inability to catch up to Qualcomm is forcing Apple to rethink its partnership.
“There have been several reports over the past month that have compared the speeds associated with both the INTC and QCOM modems in their respective iPhone models, with INTC coming up short,” he wrote in a letter to investors.
“While Apple will certainly keep a second source if possible, it isn’t going to do so for too long if it has to handicap half of its devices.”
He added: “This should give QCOM a path towards recapturing all of Apple over the next two years if Intel doesn’t find an answer.”
What’s more, according to Sepenzis, Intel is some way from creating a comparable unit that it can supply for next-generation iPhone handsets.
Just the latest in a long line of recent iPhone 8 rumours, past reports have suggested the tenth anniversary iPhone will play host to everything from a new, all-glass design to a curved form factor with improved cameras and a faster processor.
